Missed plane in Myanmar (no Internet, no card machines)

Seeing “The Gathering” was first on our list when planning Sri Lanka. The world’s largest congregation of Asian elephants happens here every July to September to feast (they eat 150kg of grass a day!), bathe…and play fight (keep watching to the end).

One of my travel hills to die on is that there’s no city on Earth as fascinating as Istanbul.

Ignoring East-meets-West cliches, it’s impossible not to be attracted to a city that spans two continents and 1,500 years of history.

First time, you’ll tick off the classics - Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia - and love every moment. A return trip allows you to go deeper with sensational food, parks as good as any in London or Paris and neighbourhoods off the beaten path.

When people think of Paris, walking amongst the bones of 5m previous inhabitants isn’t normally top of the “must do” tourist list.

Underneath the city is a vast network of tunnels, preciously used as quarries, which contain the remains of centuries of previous Parisians.

It’s decidedly eerie - not least when you see skulls rearranged into crosses and hearts - but one of the city’s most unique sites and one you’re unlikely to forget.

I’d been toNotre Dame a couple of times but never really looked up before entering. That’s a lot to miss!

From Adam, Eve and Mary eyeing you up to kings being buggered with sticks to the dead being marched off to hell by altogether gleeful devils, the iconography is something else and well worth pausing for!

Of course you should also go inside to see the after-effects of cleaning 800 years of grime off the pillars but don’t forget to look up on arrival !

And the gargoyles? No biblical significance whatsoever, just a decorative 1860s invention (still my favourite part!)

Ireland is a country just asking for a roadtrip - getting out of Dublin is the best thing a visitor can ever do!

From the picture-perfect villages of Cong and Ennistymon to the windswept Donegal coast to Northern Ireland’s Game of Throne tourist boom (seriously I geeked out!) this land packs a punch whatever your travel style. And yes, the Guinness does indeed tastes better.

Borneo is one of those mythical destinations which could easily fall short of expectations but is more likely to cause your jaw to involuntarily drop!

From hornbills to sunbears to proboscis monkeys (the one with the nose!) to the legendary orangutans, it’s one of the most important ecosystems on Earth. As importantly, the authorities have got ahead of the game in preserving the landscape and protecting the wildlife that makes this such a unique place.
